- The Shawshank Redemption. There’s little not to like about this classic tale of redemption. From the script, to the acting, to the gorgeous score, to the dulcet tones of Morgan Freeman, I find myself coming back to this film a lot—either watching the whole thing at once, or catching snippets via YouTube clips—whenever I could use a little pick-me-up.
- Coco. Coco has everything you need in a comfort movie: a dramatic and compelling storyline, stunning animation, an adorable elderly character, beautiful music, and an ending that the kids will like and will make the grown-ups cry (happy) tears every single time.
- A Night at the Opera. The plot of any Marx brothers movie is somewhat inscrutable, but it doesn’t really matter. Groucho and the boys spend the movie running their various scams while a pair of star-crossed opera singers try to make it big and find love.
- Spirited Away. Hayao Miyazaki’s best film unfolds like a dream. A young girl, Chihiro, is on a road trip with her family. Her parents stop to investigate an abandoned theme park styled like a traditional Japanese bath house and are soon transformed into pigs by a strange spell, thrusting the girl into a supernatural world of wandering spirits, talking animals, and hungry ghosts.
- 20th Century Women (2016) Set in Santa Barbara, California in 1979, 20th Century Women is another great coming-of-age story. The film follows 15-year-old Jamie (Lucas Jade Zumann) and the various women in his life: his 55-year-old single mother, Dorothea (Annette Bening), his best friend Julie (Elle Fanning), and Abbie (Greta Gerwig), a photographer who's into punk music.
- Set It Up (2018) While rom-coms experienced a decline after the 2000s, Set It Up proved that the genre wasn't completely dead. The Netflix romantic comedy movie focuses on Harper (Zoey Deutch) and Charlie (Glen Powell), two overworked assistants who plot to set their bosses (Lucy Liu, Taye Diggs) up with each other.
- Lady Bird (2017) Greta Gerwig has become an acclaimed director, and it all started with her excellent solo directorial debut. Set in Sacramento, California in 2002, the coming-of-age comedy-drama follows Christine "Lady Bird" McPherson as she deals with her senior year of high school and a strained relationship with her mother, Marion (Laurie Metcalf).
- To All The Boys I've Loved Before (2018) Based on Jenny Han's 2014 young adult novel of the same name, To All the Boys I've Loved Before follows Lara Jean Covey (Lana Condor), a shy teen girl whose life is altered after her younger sister Kitty (Anna Cathcart) mails out the letters she'd addressed to all the boys she's crushed on.

With its star-studded cast including Paul Rudd, Craig Roberts, and Selena Gomez, The Fundamentals of Caring delicately walks the line between being funny enough to put a smile on your face but emotional enough to make you shed a tear. Wong Kar Wai's Chungking Expresstells the story of two Hong-Kong policemen who fall in love with two different women: one with a mysterious woman who frequents the underground life of the city, and one with an ethereal server at a late-night restaurant he often visits. These two melancholy stories, told in two different parts, explore loneliness an...

One of his most memorable roles is Josh Baskin, a 13-year-old boy who makes a wish at a carnival machine to be big, and overnight becomes a full-grown man. He has no choice but to fully immerse himself in the world of adults including getting a c...

The pairing of Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe as two private investigators forced to work together to investigate the apparent suicide of a fading porn star in '70s Los Angeles is shamelessly funny.
