Léon Breitling founder of Breitling in 1884. In 1882 the world was in a period of transition. The industrial revolution had done its worst and everything was starting to feel incredibly modern. Industry, science and sport were all progressing in leaps and bounds. And witnessing all of this was Leon Breitling.
Breitling SA was founded in Saint-Imier by Léon Breitling in 1884. [1] When Breitling died in 1914, the business passed to his son, Gaston, and then to his grandson, Willy, in 1935. Willy's children, however, were not interested in pursuing the family business, so the Breitling factory in La Chaux de Fonds closed in December 1978.
Being a man of great style himself, Willy Breitling recognized people’s desire for products that reflected the elegance and glamor of the era. Breitling was already producing sophisticated chronographs for personal use, but he took things a step further with the development of the Premier collection, a distinctive new line of watches intended for a discerning and stylish clientele.
Willy Breitling launched the Top Time collection with a clear mission: to suit the needs of “young and active professionals.” Thanks to its elegant yet unconventional designs, that included square cases and graphic dials, the Top Time quickly became the watch of choice for a fashionable in-crowd of men and women equally drawn to the watch’s bold proportions.
One of the most significant watch launches – and periods within Breitling’s history – came in 1952, while Willy Breitling, grandson of Léon, was in control. The prototype for the iconic Breitling Navitimer – a portmanteau of ‘navigation’ and ‘timer’ – was released to the world.
