Apr 13, 2023 · The most famous part of Wapping is one that you may need to help locate precisely. For over 400 years, it was home to London’s infamous Execution Dock. This was a gibbet that hung over the Thames on a dock, and it was the place of execution for pirates and sea goers who had broken the law.
Wapping (/ ˈwɒpɪŋ /) is an area in the borough of Tower Hamlets in London, England. It is in East London and part of the East End. Wapping is on the north bank of the River Thames between St Katharine Docks to the west, and Shadwell to the east. This position gives the district a strong maritime character.
- The Prospect of Whitby. We start our ‘best things to do in Wapping’ guide with one of the oldest riverside pubs in London. The oldest riverside pub setting in London dating back to the 1520s (500 years young!)
- St Katharine Docks. A magnificent marina in the shadow of London’s iconic Tower Bridge, St Katharine’s Dock has numerous waterside restaurants and cafes, all with stunning glimpses of the superyachts assembled around the quay.
- Dickens Inn. This former 18th warehouse was never actually ever frequented by Charles Dickens himself, but this doesn’t stop The Dickens Inn in St Katharine’s Dock (Tower Hill) being one of the most popular pubs and Instagrammable places in London.
- Tobacco Dock. An exhibition and events centre that has played host to various expos and festivals, you know you’ve reached Tobacco Dock when you see the huge ships ‘docked’ out front (in reality, they are permanent features).
- Prospect of Whitby. There’s no other way to start your exploration of Wapping than with a visit to the legendary Prospect of Whitby, London’s oldest riverside tavern.
- St. Katharine’s Docks. As you wander through Wapping, the lure of St. Katharine’s Docks will inevitably draw you. This gorgeous marina, tucked away behind Tower Bridge, offers an idyllic walk as shiny yachts bob gently against the backdrop of chic cafes and boutique shops.
- Wapping Old Stairs. Wapping is full of treasures, and the fascinating Wapping Old Stairs is one of them. Steeping in maritime history, these stairs once served as the welcoming point for the adventurers docking at the Port of London.
- Pelican Stairs Beach. Not too far from the Wapping Old Stairs and right next to the oldest pub by the river in London, you’ll stumble upon the hidden gem of Pelican Stairs Beach.

- Catch a Show at Wilton’s Music Hall. As devoted theatre luvvies, Wilton’s Music Hall has captured our hearts. Tucked away down Graces Alley, the building looks like it’s been taken straight from a history book and is one of the few historic music halls that survive to this day.
- Kayak at Shadwell Basin. Feeling energetic? Venture down to Shadwell Basin for a selection of outdoor activities, including sailing, canoeing and kayaking – beginners are encouraged to join in.
Feb 9, 2017 · From its riverside location to its fascinating history, Wapping is one of London’s best-kept secrets. Once a dockland slum, the winding cobbled streets are now lined with converted warehouses and fashionable restaurants.
Wapping is a tiny area in East London between Tower Bridge and Limehouse. It’s characterised by quaint cobbled streets, old converted warehouses, historical pubs and gorgeous riverside properties. We grew to know Wapping very well on our daily lockdown walks when we lived in Limehouse.
