(JPJapanese: スーパーマリオ64DS
Romaji: Sūpā Mario Rokujūyon Dī Esu) (often known as SM64DS and originally known as Super Mario 64 x 4) is a 2004 platformer and action-adventure game in the Mario series developed by Nintendo EAD 4 and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo DS.
The game is an enhanced remake of the popular 1996 Nintendo 64 game, Super Mario 64. It is also the first 3D Mario game to be released on this handheld console. Like its predecessor, the game was released as a launch title.
Unlike in the original game, this version features a Touch Screen control, a wireless multiplayer VS. Mode in which up to 4 players can play locally, mini-games, and 150 Power Stars to collect (30 more than in the original game). Above all these additions though, the remake comes with the inclusion of other characters like Luigi, Wario, and Yoshi, that are also accompanied with a twist on the original story plot.
Spoiler warning: The following information contains spoilers. Please read at your own risk.
Peach sends Mario a letter so that he may come to the castle as she baked him a piece of cake. Then, a Lakitu Bros. flies around Peach's Castle giving the player a view of the terrain along with Yoshi sleeping on the roof. Suddenly, a pipe comes up from the ground and out Mario jumps. Mario turns around and two more pipes rise up, holding Luigi and Wario inside as they somehow managed to read the letter as well. Although surprised to see the other two there, Mario lets it go and the trio race to the castle. When Luigi accidentally caused a fight, they fight for a while until all three bump into each other. Then, both Mario and Luigi look at Wario who points to the castle. Then, they go to the castle for the cake.
Later on, the Lakitu Bro. takes Yoshi off the castle and onto the ground. He then wakes Yoshi up and shows his concern to him that Mario has not yet returned and that he should go check to see where he is.
As Yoshi tries to enter the castle, the Lakitu Bro. told him that the doors are locked. He tells Yoshi that he saw a Rabbit holding the key to opening the door. Yoshi then goes along, chases the rabbit in the maze and collects the key from him once the Rabbit is caught.
According to the Toad in the foyer, Mario, Luigi, and Wario all went to the Bob-omb painting to collect the Power Stars after hearing that Peach was recently again kidnapped by Bowser. Goomboss, King Boo, and Chief Chilly then were all sent out to capture the three Bros. The Goomboss held Mario, King Boo held Luigi, and Chief Chilly held Wario. Now it's up to Yoshi to find the Power Stars and rescue them, which he eventually does, then they battle Bowser twice. After collecting 80 Power Stars, Mario can battle Bowser one last time. Then the four land in front of the castle rescuing Peach and a cake and the credits roll.
Spoiler warning: Spoilers end here.
Power Stars
The game features worlds which the player can access by jumping through paintings in different rooms inside the castle. Each world has seven Power Stars (there were six in the original Nintendo 64 version of the game) and a 100 Coin Star which need to be collected by completing goals. There are a total of 150 Power Stars in the game to be unlocked (there were only 120 Stars in the original game).
Making use of the Nintendo DS's features, the player is offered three different ways to control the character. All the three modes are always accessible by pressing the Select button.
•In Standard Mode, the chosen character is controlled with the Control Pad. The stylus can also be used in Standard Mode. Jumping is B; punching, kicking, and sticking out Yoshi's tongue is A; and dashing is Y. The R button is used for crouching, while L handles the camera together with the Pad Control Pad. Additionally, if the player presses and holds B and presses A, the player will wall-kick (if playing as Mario). Compared to Super Mario 64, where Mario was moving as fast as the player tilted the Stick of the Nintendo 64 controller, the characters in Super Mario 64 DS move much more slowly when the run button is not pressed.
•In Touch Mode, the character is controlled by having the player move their thumb or the stylus across the Touch Screen. By using the thumb or stylus, the player can adjust the character's speed and direction in a manner similar to what was possible with the Nintendo 64's Control Stick. Jumping, crouching, and kicking are still executed with the buttons.
•In Dual-Hand Mode, the character is controlled with the stylus, and jumping, kicking, and crouching are done by utilizing either the buttons, for left-handed players, or the Control Pad, for right-handed players. The movement radius is larger with this control option, and all camera adjustments are done with the Touch Screen as well. The L and R buttons are not used.
In order to have more of a chance of beating the game, the player needs to find the three plumbers who were flung behind the doors behind by Bowser. The following table below shows each character attributes to a certain statistic. Each has their own special abilities:
In the painting worlds and some secret courses, the Caps of Mario, Luigi, and Wario can be found and are visible on the Touch Screen. When a Cap is put on, the player's character turns into the corresponding character who owns the Cap. He gets all moves of the character who owns the flat Cap, including the Power Flower power-ups, but will keep his original voice. The Caps are usually found on the heads of Goombas, Boos, or Dorrie; on land or underwater; or on any other enemy.
When the player is hit by an enemy, the Cap topples off, and the character needs to retrieve it in a limited time. When the cap disappears, it reappears on a different, set, random location in the course.
If Mario, Luigi, or Wario loses their original Caps, they cannot pick up any other characters' Caps or use Power Flowers (a Bob-omb will come out instead) until they retrieve their own. They also take double damage when hurt.
With Yoshi, a player can select the Cap when selecting a Star right after jumping into a painting. If a Cap is selected, Yoshi will put it on after entering the course. Yoshi is the only character that can use all three Caps.
Coins can be accepted and collected by each character. In each course, there are a little over 100 Coins, and collecting 100 gives the player 15 extra Stars for the 15 courses. The player gets an extra life if they get at least 50 Coins. The highest number of Coins that the player can collect up to is 255. They can be found on land, in the sea, on ...
Unlike in the original game, there are no Wing, Vanish, and Metal Caps, until you unlock Mario, Luigi, or Wario (in that order) or pick up one of their Caps. They instead are replaced with Power Flowers (Mario is the only one who can get wings in single-player mode). Additionally, all of the ! Blocks (but the yellow one) have been replaced with a r...
The keys are used to unlock Mario, Luigi, and Wario. They are obtained after boss battles. Mario's key is obtained once Goomboss is defeated, Luigi's key is obtained once King Boo is defeated, and Wario's key is obtained once Chief Chilly is defeated.
Upon catching all of the eight Glowing Rabbits, the player receives a key that opens the white room in the character switch room. The first time to open it and enter, a character finds a secret Power Star. However, if the character comes back after taking it, Boos' laughs can be heard, and the hero comes out from the door, startled.
At the beginning of the game, after catching a rabbit near the small hedge on the left of the castle, Yoshi gets the key to unlock the castle's front door.
After clearing the first two Bowser levels, the player receives keys to access the basement and second floor, respectively.
