The brewery opened in 1873 after William Butler and Company had outgrown its existing site at Priestfield in the south east of Wolverhampton. Springfield had an abundance of water from natural springs, and the land had remained undeveloped because the ground was marshy.

This brewery was built in 1873, for William Butler, as a self-contained site with maltings, brewhouse, stables and offices. The picture shows the clock mechanism in the boiler house. Regulating the time for each process in brewing can be highly important in producing the ideal beer.
