Quimper, with its vernacular architecture, is a popular tourist destination. Quimper is the ancient capital of Cornouaille, Brittany's most traditional region, and has a distinctive Breton Celtic character.
Jun 18, 2018 · The attractive city of Quimper is the oldest in Brittany. Originally settled during Roman times, Quimper saw a significant economic boost from the 17th century due to its pottery industry and today, it’s still a bustling spot in the region, fiercely proud of its Celtic heritage and Breton culture.
Quimper takes its name from the Breton term “Kemper”, meaning “confluence”. And you can see why, since three rivers flow through this city of art and history, not far from the sea, where nature and stone, traditional and contemporary know-how are showcased in equal measure.
- Quimper Cathedral. Often the best cathedrals are the ones that are a bit irregular, and Quimper’s certainly comes into that category. This magnificent building is unique because the north side of the nave curves slightly inwards at the middle; this was done to avoid an area of swampy ground during construction in the 13th century.
- Musée des Beaux-Arts. Much of what greets you at Quimper’s Fine Arts Museum belonged to one man, Jean-Marie de Silguy, who donated more than a thousand works in 1864 on the proviso that the city built a museum in which to display them.
- Musée de la Faïence. For a lot of people “Quimper” means ceramics: Faïence pottery has been produced in the Locmaria quarter, just southwest of the centre of Quimper, since the late-17th century.
- Musée Départemental Breton. In the Episcopal palace where the Cornouaille Bishops lived from the 1500s to the 1800s, the Breton Departmental Museum is an absorbing ride through the rich heritage and culture of Quimper and Finistère.

Quimper is a popular and interesting town in south-west Brittany, and it is the capital (prefecture) of the Finistere department. The town is also in an attractive setting, in a pretty valley at the confluence of the Odet and Steir rivers.
The historic city of Quimper is characterized by a bold identity of Finistère, just close to the western point of Brittany. Quimper is famous for its amazing old town, with medieval timber-framed houses with emblematic Breton granite at the base.
