Mysterious Island, American science-fiction adventure film, released in 1961, that is based loosely on Jules Verne’s book of the same name, a sequel to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
In the film a group of Union prisoners escape, via hot-air balloon, from a Confederate stockade during the American Civil War and end up on a mysterious and remote uncharted island. Two stranded women join the prisoners as they battle pirates, escape from a volcano, and fight assorted giant animals and prehistoric monsters. The group eventually meets Captain Nemo (played by Herbert Lom) and discovers that the oversized creatures are part of his ill-fated plan to end starvation around the world.
