The Shadow in the Courtyard (other English-language titles are Maigret Mystified and The Shadow Puppet; French: L'Ombre chinoise) is a detective novel by Belgian writer Georges Simenon, featuring his character inspector Jules Maigret.
A stripper starts to report a murder that has not yet happened, but leaves before making the report official. She is found murdered that morning. Complicating matters is the relationship she had with one of Maigret's assistants.
Maigret began his life in the Judiciare patrolling the mean back streets of the capital-rubbing shoulders with petty criminals, gangsters, and prostitutes. Simenon had haunted the same places to collect raw material on which to base his stories.
