Mar 6, 2019 · Leeds is famous for being the birthplace of many famous people and brands. Retailer Marks and Spencer opened their first shop in the Kirkgate Market over a hundred years ago. First World War Prime-minister Henry Herbert Asquith was born in Morley.
- Shopping. Leeds is famous for being a prime destination for shoppers in the UK. The city features over 3.5 million square feet of retail space, more than 5 miles of dedicated shopping streets, and the longest pedestrianized shopping area in the country.

- We’ve been flying for over a century. The oldest flying aeroplane in Britain was made here in Leeds. Blackburn Type D was a pioneering aircraft – a one seat single engine monoplane, it was built by Robert Blackburn for Cyril Foggin in 1912, just 10 years after the famous first flight of The Wright Brothers.
- The world’s first steam locomotive was made in Leeds. Matthew Murray is one of the pioneers of the industrial age. He helped John Marshall build the Marshall Mills complex, which is still in use today, but his biggest role came with the progression of steam trains.
- We gave the world Cluedo. Anthony E. Pratt’s created one of the most famous boardgames in history. He turned his love of detective novels into a crime caper called Murder – the game we now know as Cluedo.
- The second Ryder Cup was hosted here. The Ryder Cup is the biggest event in golf, but did you know it once took place in Leeds? The second event in its history and the first to be held in Europe teed off at Moortown Golf Club in 1929.
Leeds developed as a mill town during the Industrial Revolution alongside other surrounding villages and towns in the West Riding of Yorkshire. It was also known for its flax industry, iron foundries, engineering and printing, as well as shopping, with several surviving Victorian era arcades, such as Kirkgate Market.

- Royal Armouries. Royal Armouries is one of the best attractions in Leeds. It’s five floors crammed full of amazing relics, trinkets and treasures from the National Collection of Arms and Armour.
- Leeds Town Hall. This Cuthbert Brodrick-designed icon was opened by Queen Victoria in 1858, but it still has hallmarks of royal finery to this day. It’s a towering symbol of civic pride and a fine example of Victorian architecture, retaining many of its old-world features.
- Kirkstall Abbey. There are few better things to do in Leeds than exploring the wonderful Kirkstall Abbey. It’s one of the best remaining medieval Cistercian abbeys left in Britain and you can take a tour through its breathtaking ruins, weaving in and out of the dilapidated rooms where monks once lived and prayed.

First, enter the house and experience what it was like for the well-to-do to live here before experiencing one of the most important collections of fine and decorative art in Britain.
