IGMP version 2 is the “enhanced” version of IGMP version 1. One of the major reasons for a new version was to improve the “leave” mechanism. In IGMP version 1, hosts just stop listening to the multicast group address, but they never report this to the router. Here are the new features:

IGMP so hosts can tell routers they want to receive...

Mar 27, 2024 · IGMPv2's introduction of leave group messages and querier election significantly improved multicast group management's efficiency and responsiveness. It is the default IGMP version on many Cisco devices, reflecting its widespread acceptance and implementation in network infrastructures.

It was the first IGMP version that allowed to explicitly announce its willingness to receive particular multicast traffic. This version had two messages only: The Membership Query was always sent to 224.0.0.1 by multicastrouters, and the Membership Report was always sent by stations to the group that a station wanted to join. There was no message to...
The next version of IGMPamong other IGMP versions had some enhancement – 1. Membership Query was of both types i.e. general (sent to 224.0.0.1) and group-specific (sent to a particular multicast group). The general Membership Query is used to find out all multicast groups that the stations are subscribed to. The group-specific Membership Query is u...
It was introduced as a need to support source-specific multicast. The IGMPv1/IGMPv2 does not have the capability to specify a particular sender. The extensions of the IGMP to support the source-specific multicast led to the creation of the IGMPv3. Related- IGMP Basics

With regards to IGMP v1/2/3 it is best to always use v3 on your networking hardware. IGMPv3 should be backwards compatible, and v2 adds support for better control via hosts (to leave a multicast group) and v3 allows sources to only come from a specified sender within a multicast group.
IGMP is a network layer protocol used to set up multicasting on networks that use the Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4). Specifically, IGMP allows devices to join a multicasting group.
Sep 28, 2024 · Introduced as an improvement over the initial version, IGMPv2 brought several enhancements. One of the most notable features is the capability for hosts to send Leave Group messages to routers, thereby reducing the time it takes to stop receiving unwanted traffic.
IGMPv2 is the second and advanced version of IGMPv1. And version 2 is the default IGMP version in Cisco devices. Here, in IGMPv2 the Membership Queries sent by the router can be group specific or as the same as IGMPv1 (to all the routers). IGMPv2 works like version 1 but with a big difference. This difference is Leave Group Messages.
