Sep 23, 2024 · Bocas del Toro is a beautiful area of Panama known for its mix of adventure and relaxation. From snorkelling colourful coral reefs to lounging on beautiful beaches to exploring bat caves, there are so many fun things to do in Bocas del Toro.
- Visit the Parque Nacional Marino Isla Bastimentos. Founded in 1988, Parque Nacional Marino Isla Bastimentos is Panama’s first (and foremost) marine park.
- Spot the turtles at Playa Larga. Located within the boundaries of the marine park, Playa Larga is a stunning six-kilometer (3.7-mile) stretch of sand on the southeast side of Isla Bastimentos.
- See the frogs at Red Frog Beach. Also located on Isla Bastimentos is the popular Red Frog Beach. This beach takes its name from the rana rojo, aka the strawberry poison dart frog, which lives here.
- Go to Playa Bluff. This is one of the most popular beaches on the Caribbean side of Bocas del Toro, located in Isla Colón. You can easily get there in one hour by bike – but you can also take a taxi or a bus – from Bocas Town (hence the popularity), in fact there are some good accommodation options in the area too.
- Getting there is easy and cheap but the shuttles are jam-packed. We took a tourist shuttle from Boquete to Bocas which should have taken an hour less than it did – we stopped for an HOUR long coffee break on a 3.5-hour trip.
- Isla Colon is a backpacker’s zone and party-place. if you’re over that, older, or more of a quiet person you might want to stay on Bastimentos (Red Frog Beach) or Cristobal Island.
- Booking online is a must so that they can offer you complimentary transportation if off-island. There are water taxis between islands but this can add up.
- These are the best boutique hotels there: On the map above I added to these hotels, too, so you can see where they are. Keep in mind, almost all of the nice hotels are on islands other than Isla Colon since that is the backpacker place.
- Go Scuba Diving. The best thing I did on Bocas del Toro was go scuba diving. We did two fun dives with Boca’s Diving Pirates and really recommend them!
- Visit Starfish Beach. Before arriving on Bocas del Toro I had heard so much about Starfish Beach and just had to visit. The beach got its name because of the fact that lots of starfish live in the shallow calm waters at the beach.
- Relax at Drago Beach. If you’re going to Starfish Beach you will ultimately have to visit Drago Beach to get there. So, why not spend a little bit of time relaxing at the much less busy, but still beautiful, Drago Beach?
- Party at Aqua Lounge Bar. One of the most famous bar/hostels in Bocas del Toro is the Aqua Lounge. This unique bar is almost completely surrounded by water and is a really fun place to party.
Headed to Panama and looking for the best things to do in Bocas del Toro? You’ll be pleasantly pleased to learn that Bocas is way more than just a backpacker’s town, with prime wildlife spotting opportunities, pristine palm-fringed beaches, and lush, green jungle. Trust me, there’s lots to love about these Panamanian islands.
Sep 13, 2024 · It’s a popular destination in Panama for both locals and tourists, known for its vibrant Afro-Caribbean culture, pristine beaches, snorkeling, surfing, wildlife, and nightlife. You can make Bocas del Toro a standalone vacation or combine it with a visit to other parts of Panama or Costa Rica.
This island is also famous for all its wildlife, for its contrast between beaches without human intervention and others with villas and resorts, but above all, for its wild waves: the most sought after by pro and advanced surfers.
