Aug 1, 2014 · There are certain ingredients that are important when writing a poem, but poetry is one of those awkward little things where, just because something works for one poem, it doesn’t mean it’ll work for another.
What are the most important elements of poetry? The most important elements of poetry are structure, form, syntax, figurative language, rhyme, meter, theme, diction, etc.
- Rhyme and rhyme scheme. When we think of poetry, rhyme is probably the first poetic device that comes to mind. From the tales of Mother Goose to the works of the greats, it’s one of the defining characteristics of poetry.
- Meter. Meter is the basic structure of a line of poetry, whereby stressed and unstressed syllables are used in a predetermined way to create rhythm. In a sense, it’s the heartbeat of a poem.
- Lineation. Also known as layout, lineation is about how words and sentences are physically arranged on the page. While poetry is often best enjoyed when spoken aloud, it can also be a visual medium — and lineation is a large part of that.
- Form. Pulling back for a second, let’s take a wider look at poetry in general and talk about form. Form is the actual structure of a poem and consists of three parts: rhyme scheme, meter, and lineation.
- Write down all your ideas. Getting started is sometimes the hardest part, so it makes sense to start at the source. What do you want to write about? And, why do you want to write about it?
- Consider the mood. You know what you want to write about, but how do you want to make the reader feel? Some poetry might never be read, but we’re going to operate under the assumption that you want someone else to read and enjoy your work.
- Who’s speaking? Often overlooked, it is important to consider who is speaking when crafting your poem. Are you the speaker? Does this poem come straight from your perspective?
- Consider the structure. Structure refers to what the poem is made up of, how it is presented to the reader and the more technical aspects such as line length and rhyme scheme.
- Pay Attention to Word Choice. To really understand poetry, you need to understand the importance of word choice. You do not want to use cheap words to describe big moments or feelings.
- Go for a Strong Emotional Reaction. Most people remember the things that made them react emotionally. We can name the movie that makes us cry. We can name the song that makes us feel great when experiencing a slump at work or going through a break-up.
- Literary Devices. The use of literary devices can help to elevate your poems and your writing in general, as long as it is done sparingly enough not to seem lazy.
- Cut Out Unnecessary Words and Lines. Your poem does not have to rhyme, and it does not have to be about your life. Also, it does not have to be about a world crisis.
