Paul W.S. Anderson’s latest movie adapted from a Capcom game, Monster Hunter, ends in a pretty dramatic manner. If the conclusion has left you a little confused, or if you’re looking to find the connections between the events of the film and the video games, then you’re in the right place. This is our spoiler-filled explainer for the ending of Monster Hunter.
Warning: full spoilers follow for the ending of Monster Hunter.
In the concluding act of Monster Hunter, Ron Perlman’s Admiral explains to Milla Jovovioch’s Captain Artemis that a huge, ancient construct called the Sky Tower is responsible for creating the portal that pulled her from ‘Our World’ into ‘The New World’, the primary setting of Monster Hunter. While everyone else from The New World is unable to understand Artemis, the Admiral is able to talk with her as he has studied the English language from materials brought through from our world by the Sky Tower.
The Sky Tower is roughly based on the Sky Corridor introduced in the game Monster Hunter Frontier G6; a construct made by the Ancient Civilization that lived long before this world’s current inhabitants. This civilization was incredibly technologically advanced, and harvested dragons and wyverns to create colossal towers that stretched above the clouds, as well as terrifying bioweapons.
The choice to use Gore Magala is notable; it’s a major threat introduced in Monster Hunter 4, and one so dangerous that it could wipe out an entire population. It’s also so rare that it’s one of very few creatures without a category in the game’s bestiary. Furthermore, official Monster Hunter books have stated that Gore Magala is a juvenile Elder Dragon, one of the key types of monsters that the Ancient Civilization harvested and experimented with. This Gore Magala specifically may simply have been one of the many monsters trained to defend the Sky Tower, like the Greater Rathalos. Or, perhaps the suggestion is that this creature is responsible for the destruction of the Ancient Civilization, considering its reputation in the games. Whatever is going on, it seems clear that the sequence is Anderson hinting towards the direction he’d like to explore in any potential sequel. Monster Hunter World's The Seeker. But that’s not everything. As the three heroes begin their attack on Gore Magala, they are observed from above by a mysterious hooded figure. Considering that much of the movie’s inspiration lies in Monster Hunter World, this is likely to be The Seeker, a member of the Wyverian race (humanoids that are suggested to be descended from Wyverns). In the game he is investigating the mysteries of Elder Crossing, a ritual that Elder Dragons undertake when they die. Since Gore Magala is a juvenile Elder Dragon, it could be that he’s there to observe what happens when it is slain.
We then see the Felyne Meowscular Chef arrive on the scene, demonstrating his fighting capabilities. It’s unclear, however, if he’s turned up to help aid the hunters, or to challenge the hooded figure. Before taking up his meat cleaver and spice rack in the Monster Hunter World game, Meowscular Chef was the Palico companion of the Admiral, and so it makes sense that he could be a valuable asset in a fight, either against Gore Magala or the mysterious observer.
And that’s about all there is to it. Unlike Anderson’s own Resident Evil films or the plethora of comic book movies, there’s not a huge amount to dig into here, or much more than a vague promise of ‘more to come’.
