Nov 20, 2020 · Recognition memory, at least as defined behaviourally, is an ability in this sense because it is routinely evaluated against a performance criterion (e.g., per cent correct). Other cognitive capacities, such as the capacity to hope, or to believe, are not abilities in this sense.

Recognition memory is defined as the ability to identify familiar stimuli or situations encountered previously, playing a crucial role in declarative episodic memory and cognitive function. It allows effortless identification of people, places, words, sounds, and objects in a fraction of a second.
Within declarative memory we can find, among others, recognition memory. In this article we will explain what a memory phenomenon of recognition memory consists of and what is its usefulness in people’s daily lives, being a fundamental element at a cognitive level.
A hallmark of recognition memory is that it can both lead to a distinct feeling of oldness, or familiarity, as well as evoke vivid spatiotemporal details associated with the prior experience of the item or event.

Dec 1, 2008 · The development of formal models has aided theoretical progress in recognition memory research. Here, I review the findings that are critical for testing them, including behavioral and brain imaging results of single-item recognition, plurality discrimination, and associative recognition experiments under a variety of testing conditions.
