Bullet wounds should be treated as contaminated, and broad-spectrum antibiotics, including those with an anaerobic spectrum, are indicated. Although musculoskeletal injuries resulting from gunshots are most common in horses, they carry a good prognosis for survival and return to function.

The decision to destroy a horse is not taken by the owner in any case, but by two vets, trained to assess whether the injuries are too severe to hold out hope of treatment. Once a decision is made, the horse is ‘destroyed’ quickly to minimise its distress.
A 5-year-old, Quarter horse mare was treated for severe cellulitis secondary to a gunshot wound near the right humerus. The bullet was not retrieved due to the risk of damaging the radial nerve or elbow joint.

Oct 8, 2024 · The lethal injection can only be administered by a veterinary surgeon. In some cases, the horse may be sedated beforehand. The injection consists of an overdose of anaesthetic drugs which causes the horse to collapse, experiencing a rapid loss of consciousness followed by the heart stopping.
Pets can appear completely normal right after severe penetrating trauma or gunshot wounds, only to collapse in shock 30 to 90 minutes later. Penetrating wounds such as sticks, arrows, or gunshots can be life-threatening though the outer appearance of a wound may not seem as severe.
