In the mid-to-late 1980s, the University of London underwent considerable reorganisation, and many smaller colleges were merged. Consequently, Westfield was merged with Queen Mary College in 1989, forming Queen Mary and Westfield College.
Rejecting a purely domestic lifestyle, there was an aim – and a clear need – to extend the empowerment and liberation offered by higher education to women. Westfield College was founded in 1882 through the efforts of Ann Dudin Brown, Constance Maynard, Caroline Cavendish and Mary Petrie.
In accordance with a decision by the University of London, Westfield College ceased to admit students for a natural science degree. As a result between 1948 and 1950 Westfield gradually relinquished teaching Botany.
In 1960 the University formally acknowledged Westfield College as a School in the Faculty of Science as well as a School in the Faculty of Arts. The new building was completed by Oct 1961 at which point Westfield began to offer degrees in Botany, Zoology, Physics, and Chemistry.
