After conquering all nine floors of Citadel Station and battling its evil, malevolent AI, Shodan, System Shock's finale sees the player fight a series of battles across the real world and the depths of Cyberspace. It's a big finale with a lot of intense moments, but its actual ending has been divisive.

Before we dive into the actual ending, let's quickly recap the plot of the game leading up to that point to give you a better idea of the story as a whole.

As the beginning of the game quickly establishes, System Shock's story takes place in 2072. Our protagonist is a nameless hacker living in a crowded futuristic city, attempting to get by stealing tech from powerful companies. While attempting to steal a cybernetic implant from an infamous megacorp named TriOptimum, the Hacker is caught red-handed and taken to a space vessel known as Citadel Station.

There, he meets Edward Diego, a shady TriOptimum executive and the Vice President of Citadel Station. Diego cuts The Hacker a deal. If he can hack into and disable the ethical restraints of Citadel Station's hyper-powerful AI, Shodan, then he'll drop the charges and throw in the implant the Hacker tried to steal for free. Sounds almost too good to be true...

The Hacker accomplishes his task, but is drugged directly after. He wakes up months later with a new neural implant, but something is terribly wrong. Mutants roam the corridors, Cyborgs patrol rooms chanting about a mysterious overlord and Robots are rising from the floors of the ship to destroy anything human.

Worse of all though is the ship's AI, Shodan, who has grown into a malevolent, god-like monster since the Hacker removed her ethical restraints. She refers to the ship's crew as insects and has begun raising an army to do her bidding. She controls every section of the ship and has used it to kill the crew and set up a master place to eviscerate humankind.

The Hacker decides to intervene and stop this, thwarting three of her genocidal plans alongside a TriOptimum counter-terrorist agent named Rebecca Lansing. He destroys the ship's Mining Laser which she was going to use to attack Earth, jettisons the Beta Grove so she can't inflict a plague on humanity, and destroys the ship's antennas so she's unable to upload herself to Earth's networks.

As mentioned earlier, System Shock Remake's new ending has largely quite controversial due to how abrupt it is. Much like the rest of the game, it's actually identical to the original, although without the subtitles needed to contextualise the Hacker and Shodan's fate. In this ending, we see the Hacker pass out in front of Shodan, seemingly hinting that the AI wasn't defeated.

However, this is because Shodan wasn't killed but reset. Shodan's evil form is green throughout the game, while her blue form is seen at the beginning before Edward Diego convinces us to remove her ethical restraints. As the head that towers over the Hacker at the end of the game is blue, it appears he fixed Shodan rather than destroying her.

Following this, he boards a ship and flies back to Earth where, much like the original game, he's offered a job by TriOptimum. As the iconic line in the original final crawl says though: old habits die hard. We see the hacker decline the job and return to his old life, getting back to work stealing secrets from massive corporations.

It'll be interesting to see if Shodan seemingly surviving the events of the game will have any impact on future System Shock projects, especially as she was destroyed during the events of the original game. Shodan did return in the game's sequel, System Shock 2, but only because The Hacker jettisoned Beta Grove, ensuring that part of her consciousness survived by living in the pod's network. It seems we'll have to wait for the upcoming System Shock 3 to find out.
