Mar 2, 2021 · On March 2, 1971, after well over a decade of battling local, state, and federal officials, a group of activists called the Citizens to Preserve Overton Park won a victory that halted plans to extend Interstate 40 through the park.
The park is named after industrialist Lord Overtoun, a.k.a John Campbell White, who bestowed the land to the Royal Burgh of Rutherglen, but perhaps more infamous for his White’s Chemical Company. The company was found to be polluting the land in the 1800s, and much of it is still contaminated, making the gift of the park slightly ironic.
The park was laid out on land donated to the Burgh in 1904 by Lord Overtoun, [3] whose White's Chemical Works also ruined much of the area by reckless dumping of their toxic byproduct. [4]

October 25, 1979. Overton Park is a large, 342-acre (138 ha) public park in Midtown Memphis, Tennessee. The park grounds contain the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, Memphis Zoo, a 9-hole golf course, the Memphis College of Art, Rainbow Lake, Veterans Plaza, the Greensward, and other features.
