Lincoln Rhyme is a quadriplegic forensic criminalist who along with Amelia Donaghy solve homicidal crimes.
Lincoln was involved in a terrible accident when investigating a crime scene, which left him paralyzed neck down and has to rely on equipment and care to keep him going. He was also plotting to commit suicide after the accident. He is visited by homicidal detectives Paulie Sellitto and Kenny Solomon who want his help on a homicidal case in which two people were kidnapped, but one still alive but missing. Lincoln, despite appearing disinterested begins to be drawn in when looking through the case files. He works with Detective Amelia Donaghy who had come across one of the crime scenes and acted upon it.
They both solve a case involving a serial killer (The Bone Collector) after Amelia came across a dead body by the tracks. She came across evidence on the tracks which could help her solve the crime.
It is revealed that Richard Thompson aka Marcus Andrews is the serial killer and attempts to kill Lincoln but is shot to death by Amelia.
Throughout the Lincoln Rhyme book series Amelia and Lincoln form a relationship.
Reluctantly, Lincoln Rhyme abandons retirement to track down a killer whose ingenious clues hold the secret to saving his victims — if Rhyme can decipher them in time.
