Hope Andrea Mikaelson is a main character in Legacies, and she was a former major recurring character in The Originals before being promoted to a main character in the fifth season. Hope is the tribrid daughter of Niklaus Mikaelson and Hayley Marshall-Kenner. She is the granddaughter of Ansel, Esther Mikaelson and two unnamed werewolves, as well as the step-granddaughter of Mikael. She is also the niece of Freya, Finn, Elijah, Kol, Rebekah, and Henrik, and the grand-niece of Dahlia. She is also a distant relative of Lana, Eve, and Cary. She is the adoptive younger sister of Marcel Gerard via her father. Due to his marriage to Hayley, Jackson Kenner was her step-father for almost a year, until he was killed by Tristan de Martel.

She was named Hope by her father, who took inspiration from his half-brother Elijah's words about his newborn child being their family's hope. Her middle name is Andrea after her mother's birth-name and she takes the surname of her father's side.

Hope was conceived in The Vampire Diaries season four episode Bring It On, and it was revealed that Hayley was pregnant four episodes later in The Originals. She was then born in The Originals season one episode From a Cradle to a Grave. As a result of her unique heritage, she is the world's first werewolf-witch-vampire hybrid. She inherited her werewolf gene from both of her parents, while her vampire and witch legacy came from her father who is the Original vampire-werewolf hybrid and the son of the Original Witch. Through her mother's Labonair lineage, Hope is werewolf royalty.

In From a Cradle to a Grave, Hope was sent away to be raised by Rebekah, in order to protect her from her father's enemies: the Guerrera Wolves, Esther, and Dahlia. Her death was faked to protect her. However, in season two's The Brothers That Care Forgot, Esther had found Rebekah whilst she is with Hope at the park, this is signified by the presence of starlings. At the end of the second season, Hope is living with Hayley and Jackson (stepfather by marriage) in the Bayou, and by the end of the third season, she is living with Hayley on the road. By the fourth season, she lives with Hayley and the Mikaelson Family at the Abattoir.

After having the Hollow's spirit separated into four members of her family, she and Hayley leave for Mystic Falls. She becomes a student at the boarding school and as time goes by, she becomes determined to see her father again, despite the consequences that could ensue. After her parents death and defeat of the Hollow, a grieving Hope returns to the Salvatore School where she learns to fight a myriad of supernatural beings alongside her newfound friends. She ultimately activates her tribrid nature to defeat Malivore, who possessed her boyfriend. The defeat of Malivore triggered the arrival of the gods and Hope's humanity to shut-off.

Her final battle now included one for her humanity, as her remaining family gathered to help her embrace her new reality as an immortal Mikaelson. Once her humanity returns, Hope leads her friends in the final battle against Ken. Landon, now the Ferryman in Limbo, returns several fallen Salvatore group members to life, which leads to her winning the battle. Hope also gets closure with her father thanks to a gift from Landon, allowing her to finally reach a sense of inner-peace. With a number of changes at the school, Hope and the others begin a new semester, ready to guide the next class of supernatural students to be heroes.

    Season Four

In Bring It On, Niklaus Mikaelson and Hayley Marshall slept together and conceived a child. In The Originals, the witch Sophie Deveraux revealed that Hayley was, in fact, pregnant with Klaus' child. Klaus refused to believe it until he used his enhanced hearing to hear the child's heartbeat. Sophie revealed that the baby is one of Nature's "loopholes". She later revealed that it was because of Klaus' werewolf side that Hope was conceived. Sophie then demanded that Klaus help her or she would kill the baby and its mother. Klaus initially had no interest in having anything to do with the child, even telling the witches they made a mistake if they thought they could use Hayley and their child as leverage to manipulate him. He dismissed the child's existence and acted as though he didn't care if it lived or died. After some words of consideration from Elijah Mikaelson, and an-exchange from Camille O'Connell, he later changed his mind about the child. When Elijah asked him about Hayley and their unborn child, Klaus replied to him that

"Rebekah: She looks like her mother. Maybe there's a God after all.

Klaus: She has a hint of the Devil in her eyes — that's all me."

—Klaus and Rebekah about Hope in

As a baby, Rebekah mentioned that Hope looked like her mother. On the other hand, Klaus blissfully implied that Hope inherited his eyes. As a baby, she had dirty-blonde hair and round dark-blue eyes. As a child, she had long auburn hair and light blue eyes. Her cheeks had little freckles scattered across them. She was seen in light-colored sleeveless dresses, that normally had flowers or other prints on them. Hope also had dimples in her cheeks.

As a teenager, Hope is the shortest among her friends and peers, standing at 5'3" tall. She frequently wears heeled boots to accentuate her height or outfits. She has wavy auburn or dark brown hair that is seen in many styles. She has bright light-colored blue eyes and full lips. She wears relaxed yet edgy clothing that compliments her full, curvy figure. She is always seen wearing her mother's stone necklace, a Mikaelson family crest necklace, a wishbone necklace, and earrings. Caroline Forbes described her as beautiful. As a Labonair, Hope has a Crescent birthmark on her right shoulder, similar to that of her mother and distant relatives, Eve, Lana, and the Hollow.

After turning off her humanity and leaving the Salvatore School, Hope's wardrobe and fashion choices begin to expand. She wears primarily black or deep reds in the form of jumpers, boots, or jackets. She also experiments with her hair, wearing it in a top knot, a high ponytail, or crinkles for the first time. She also begins to wear more rings, hooped earrings, and less necklaces, having given her Mikaelson necklace to Rebekah. Hope also wears heavier makeup around her eyes and switches to a light red lipstick. She has more confidence and cockiness in her stance.

As the world's first hybrid of three supernatural species - a witch, a werewolf, and a vampire; the full extent or limits of Hope's powers are currently unknown.

However, as of There's Always a Loophole, Hope learns that she is not a cosmic mistake as she once thought. She is Nature's loophole that could be used against Malivore. Due to this, she can remember those that she previously knew and have been consumed by Malivore as well as heal others with her blood that have been shot with weaponized Malivore bullets.

According to Dahlia, as a firstborn of their bloodline, Hope has inherited great, but devastating power. Dahlia also notes that Hope's magic will be tainted by Klaus' vampire blood as well as the aggressive wolf temperament. Despite this, Genevieve states that Hope's magic is strong enough to fuel the French Quarter Coven's Ancestral magic for generations, while one of the Hollow's acolytes reiterates this sentiment when he states that Hope might be the greatest witch the world may ever know. As a fully transitioned tribrid, Hope did not lose her magic and can continue to practice witchcraft. However, while in transition, Hope briefly lost access to her magic, werewolf, and vampiric abilities and became more vulnerable than ever.

Prior to triggering her curse, she displayed some increased agility and grace, above that of a normal human. Since she has triggered her werewolf gene, she has gained all of the powers of lycanthropy. In The Tale of Two Wolves, with Hope's first transformation looming, Caroline questions that Crescent wolves could control their transformations. In response, Klaus states that the first transformation is a rite of passage and cannot be controlled. This implicates that her werewolf nature as an Evolved Werewolf with the ability of Transformation Control. However, in This is the Part Where You Run, Hope stated to Landon that her ability to control her transformation stems from her tribrid status, as like with other werewolf-vampire hybrids. Currently, whether it's the former or latter which grants her transformation control or additional abilities as an evolved werewolf, remains unknown. Additionally in The Tale of Two Wolves, Klaus explains that during werewolf transformations, the pain will make one want to delay the shift because that is all they believe they can handle. However, should one let the pain in, then it cannot break oneself. Following Klaus' instruction, Hope has accepted the pain during her transformation, thus it allows her to fully transform within a few minutes instead of a few hours. As a fully transitioned tribrid, Hope can transform from human to wolf form while magically maintaining her clothing. Her true form did not alter much, as she maintained her golden eyes, but with a hint of vivid red at the inner corner on her irises.

According to Dahlia, firstborns of her family's bloodline inherit great power; however, it is unstable and will damage and, ultimately, kill the witch if they are not taught to contain it. Furthermore, as a possessor of the werewolf gene, Hope will experience bouts of severe aggression.

As the world's first hybrid of all three supernatural species, the full extent and limits of Hope's weaknesses are currently unknown.

Emmett claimed that Marcel's advanced werewolf venom can take down a hybrid, an Original, and even Hope Mikaelson. However, he gave no evidence as to why it would or could be lethal to Hope, nor has this been proven to be true.

While searching for a way to kill the tribrid, Cleo Sowande allegedly saw a tree that nature had created near the birth of the tribrid. The Red Oak tree, when sharpened to a stake, is powerful enough to kill Hope. Similar to that of her biological family, Hope can be daggered and temporarily desiccated by the white oak ash daggers. However, she cannot be daggered for long without resurrecting due to her tribrid nature. This is a feat that even the Original vampires are unable to do, as the dagger has to be removed for them to revive. After the Red Oak tree was chopped down and burned, it's ash combined with god magic was forged into a spear by Jen in her father's quest to kill her. Small scratches are enough to weaken her with its poisonous effects, though this can be stopped if it's siphoned out from her. Jen claimed that the spear was a lethal combo for the Tribrid if it stabbed her in her heart.

    Hayley Marshall-Kenner

"I woke up in the church and all I felt was this hunger, and then I knew what I needed - I needed her. I can feel her. She's here. I can feel my baby." —Hayley about Hope in Hayley is Hope's mother and it is shown various times that Hayley strongly loves her daughter. When she first discovered she was pregnant, she attempted to abort the baby by ingesting wolfsbane, but when she couldn't resolve herself to do it she was attacked and she realized that she wasn't just protecting herself but the baby as well. She then learned that she will have a daughter. As time passed, Hayley grew concerned that because she never had a loving mother in her life, she would not know how to be a good mother to her daughter, but eventually, that faded and she grew to love the child deeply and like Klaus, is dedicated to protecting her at all costs. This is shown when Genevieve and the Harvest girls kidnapped Hope, and tried to kill her. Hayley was there and fought for her daughter, and got her back. She also demonstrated the aptitude to know where her daughter is, even if she is hidden by a spell. Hayley made a promise to herself that her daughter would grow up safe and loved, unlike Hayley had. She kept this promise by choosing to send Hope away with Rebekah to keep her safe from those that would wish her harm in New Orleans. After a few months apart, they were reunited. Hope lived with Hayley for five years wile they searched for a way to cure their family from Marcel's venom. When Hope became a victim of The Hollow, Hayley did everything possible to save her daughter, including dividing The Hollow into the Mikaelson siblings to protect Hope. This separated the Mikaelson family for years, as any physical contact with one another could have infinite consequences. Hayley raised Hope as a strong and independent young woman, enrolling her in the Salvatore Boarding School so she could have friends her own age, something Hope longed for. A teenage Hope desperately wanted to see father again. She faked Hayley's kidnapping to lure Klaus back into New Orleans. Her actions set off a chain of events, including Hayley's body being stolen by vampire purists. Hayley ultimately sacrificed herself to save a kidnapped Hope from the their captor. Hope suffered crippling grief after Hayley's death, and blamed herself. She was temporarily reunited with her mother in Peace, and Hayley soothed her guilt - she's at peace because of Hope. Knowing they wouldn't see one another for a long time, Hayley made Hope promise to make art, use her voice, have adventures, and at least one totally epic love. She reminded her to be every bit of herself, since the best of Hayley is in Hope.

    Niklaus Mikaelson

"I was nine. And I saw this scary monster who looked like my dad. Who taught me how to mix paint. Who called me princess. I didn't know which version of you was real. And I waited for you. To explain it. Or, apologize. Or tell me that you loved me. I waited for you for years! But you didn't come." —Hope to Klaus in Klaus is Hope's father, and even though he refused the child in Always and Forever, he soon accepted her and was determined to not behave as his step-father had, and to raise his child differently. He told Hayley the cycle of pain will end with their baby. After that, he did everything he could to make sure she was kept safe and was happy when he learned the baby would be a girl. Klaus and Hope had a difficult journey to being together, as forces stronger and out of both their control constantly tried to separate them. His loyalty and love for Hope is unwavering despite the extreme situations, as he's willing to protect her even at the cost of his own happiness or life. His love for Hope brings out the very best in him, even reconciling with Rebekah and Marcel to better protect Hope. They have been separated longer than they've been together, however, their love and adoration for each other never wavers. Hope's childhood love for Klaus was crafted by her mother, who told her stories about Klaus, his loyalty to his family, his love for her, and their shared interests in art. In the precious moments they do share, Hope adores her father and he hopes to show her the world and give her everything she could ever want. They grow closer in her teen years when he re-enters her life, and they become bonded even more. After she takes in the Hollow to save her family and be closer to her father, the power proves too much for Hope and Klaus makes the ultimate sacrifice to save her. He takes the Hollow from her and, after spending precious moments together where she promises to make the Mikaelson name proud and be okay, Klaus gives her a kiss. He and Elijah, who also has part of the Hollow in him, die together to save Hope. Hope suffers from guilt over her father's death, believing it to be her fault even years later, but hopes her father can find peace one day. During his funeral, she chooses to keep her father's ashes so he's always closer to her. She wants to scatter them somewhere meaningful to him.

    Rebekah Mikaelson

"I know I have to give her back to Hayley when the time is right. She's made me realize how much I want that child of my own that I know I can't have her." —Rebekah to Elijah about Hope Rebekah left town before Hope's birth but soon returned when Klaus asked her to protect his daughter. Klaus told Rebekah that despite their differences, there was nobody else he would trust more with the life of his daughter. Rebekah left New Orleans with Hope and became her guardian; she often told Hope stories of her birth and how her parents sent her away to be safe. Rebekah and Hope returned to New Orleans after Esther found them. Rebekah cared deeply for Hope and stayed in her life until the Hollow forces them to separate. She gives Hope a Mikaelson family crest necklace, delivered through Freya, that Hope wore for over seven years. When Hope activated her tribrid nature, she turned off her humanity and fled Mystic Falls. Rebekah tracked her down in an attempt to convince her to come home with her, where the family would help her adjust to her new nature. Hope refused and Rebekah realized her niece's humanity was off. Rebekah daggered Hope but was incapacitated before they can leave. Hope pulled out the dagger and confronted her aunt that night. Hope wanted to be left alone and refused to make her father's mistake of caring about love or family. She gave Rebekah the Mikaelson necklace as it was probably spelled by Freya and the reason Rebekah found her. Rebekah was devastated by her niece cutting her out of her life.
