Apr 2, 2014 · In 1928, Nelson married Helen Wawzynak. She called herself Helen Gillis, even after her husband had taken on the last name of Nelson. Helen was only 16 years old at the time.
Helen Wawrzyniak, a renowned accomplice, married Lester Gillis (“Baby Face Nelson”) at the young age of sixteen, resulting in her bearing the Gillis last name. When she was twenty years old, she was on the “shoot to kill” list of Public Enemies because of her sought after husband.
Nelson yelled to Helen to take cover in a nearby ditch, then he and Chase opened fire on the agents. Both Cowley and Hollis returned fire from behind their vehicle. A single .45 slug from Cowley's machine gun struck Nelson in the lower abdomen.
Helen never remarried and died on July 3, 1987, a week after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage. She was 73. Per her request, she was buried next to her husband in the Gillis family plot.
Having violated the terms of her parole, Helen Gillis was sentenced to serve one year and one day in the Women’s Federal Reformatory in Mila, Michigan.
