The Amethyst incident, also known as the Yangtze incident, was a historic event that occurred on the Yangtze River for three months in the summer of 1949, during the late phase of the Chinese Civil War.
Twenty of the crew of the British sloop Amethyst were casualties when she sustained heavy bombardment on the Yangtse River to-day. A Chinese spokesman said the firing came from Chinese Communist batteries on the north bank of the river.
The pilot quite rightly pushed off at high speed, as it happened leaving the RAF Doctor in the sampan and Amethyst’s Gunner in the plane. The RAF Doctor went over the Amethyst and did grand work for the wounded, in the event, staying with the ship the whole time till she escaped.
Early in July, under cover of darkness, Amethyst slipped its anchor chain and started traveling downstream to Shanghai. It was under artillery fire for part of the journey and had to negotiate treacherous sandbanks and a barrier in the river.
