In this episode, Sean and James discuss the 1965 classic film Von Ryan’s Express, starring Frank Sinatra, which depicts a group of Allied prisoners of war who conduct a daring escape by hijacking the freight train carrying the POWs and fleeing through German-occupied Italy to Switzerland.
Constant escape attempts have enraged the Italian commandant and resulted in the withholding of clean clothes, hot water, razors, and food parcels. The ranking British officer has just died while imprisoned in the camp sweat box.
In the original ending which appears in the source novel, Ryan is not killed as with the film's ending, he survives and with the other escaped POWs, is able to get to neutral Switzerland. This ending would have allowed Ryan, the movie's central character, to appear in a sequel.
After Italy's surrender is announced, Ryan claims that Battaglia is now a civilian, not an army officer. This is incorrect, and the characters would have known his proper (and unchanged) status. Although it surrendered, Italy continued to be a country with a proper government and military forces.
Under Ryan’s command, the prisoners escape from Italy by stealing a German POW train headed for a concentration camp and diverting it northward to neutral Switzerland and freedom. When the Germans realise what has happened, the chase is on.
