Fran and Maxwell is the relationship between main characters Fran Fine and Maxwell Sheffield.

Maxwell proposes to Fran a few times throughout the series, although with ulterior motives. He instantly regrets it each time, except in Season 5 Episode 12 where he proposes. As she realises he is only asking her as he felt guilty over blabbing about her online cosmetic dreams- therefore the idea was stolen and 'breaking her trust.' He then says that this was the first time he wasn't actually relieved that she said 'No.'

In season 5 episode 14 Maxwell tells Fran that he loves her and doesn't take it back.

The romantic tension between Maxwell and Fran lasts until the middle of the 5th season, when the couple gets engaged; following several snafus, they are finally married in the season 5 finale. Until that point, they always address each other with proper employer-employee politeness, i.e. "Miss Fine" and "Mr. Sheffield".

By the fifth season, Mr. Sheffield and Miss Fine begin a tentative romantic relationship, which consisted of a very large milestone: calling each other by their first names. Mr. Sheffield proposes marriage (a move that sends C. C. Babcock, who had an obsessive crush on Maxwell and jealous hatred of Fran, to an insane asylum), and they are married in the season 5 finale. They finally give birth to fraternal twins, Jonah and Eve, in the series finale. Jonah, who was born first, was named for Fran's side of the family, but was more reserved like his father; and Eve, who was born a few minutes later, was nasally and boisterous like her mother.

In the finale of Season 3, Mr. Sheffield finally tells Fran he loves her. They were on a plane back from Paris, and some turbulence made them believe the plane might crash. Thinking this might be his last chance, Max tells Fran he loves her and they kiss.

In Season 4 episode 1, they have survived the flight and Max regrets telling Fran he loves her. He explains that he only said it because he thought they were going to die, and that he didn't mean it. Rather than outright taking back I Love You, Max says he takes back what he said. Fran responds, sadly asking if he is taking back "The Thing". From that point, The Thing becomes code for talking about the situation.
