- The genesis of salvation is declared to be in two of God's attributes, of which the first is mercy, or compassion. God has a tender, yearning feeling towards men brought to misery by their own sins. And this feeling is not shallow or spare - he is rich in mercy.

Jan 19, 2024 · The phrase “God, who is rich in mercy” in Ephesians 2:4 is a profound statement about the character and nature of God. It provides insight into who God is and how He relates to us. Let’s break down this verse and explore what it means that God is rich in mercy.
If mercy is God’s attitude to sinful men, love is His motive in all that He does with them; and as the mercy is “rich” so the love is “great”. With this great love God loved us when He chose us, and it is on account of that love (not “through” it, as Luther puts it) that He acts with us as He does.
Just as God extends His mercy to us, we are to extend mercy to others (2 Samuel 22:26). Throughout the Bible, we see God's mercy evident in His love for His people and His kindness and mercy toward them even while they are trapped in their own sins.
