Being stuck in the past means that you have been living in the past, mentally and emotionally, and cannot let go of things that happened long ago in order to be happy in the present.
- Stop trying to be the hero of your story. We've all been hurt. It's sad and embarrassing — no-one wants to look weak. That's why we construct our idealized version of the past.
- Don't let others define who you are. Blaming others when things go wrong makes us lose control. We are letting them define the terms of how we live. You can't control what other people do, but you can control how you react.

- You think that numb is better than feeling. If you experienced trauma in childhood, the emotions would have overwhelmed you. As a young child, you could not have resolved that trauma and expressed those emotions as you needed.
- You are distracted by perfectionism and the need for approval. When your inner world is tumultuous, you may have moved your focus to the external world.
9. They lack purpose and direction in the present. Without a clear sense of purpose or direction in the present, individuals may find themselves defaulting to past reference points. The absence of compelling current goals or aspirations creates a vacuum that memories and past experiences rush to fill.
