What happens when a publisher accepts a book?
A publishing house’s main purpose is to find authors and their manuscripts to produce and publish into books. They can be responsible for several things: Selecting marketable manuscripts. Publishing houses need to know trends, statistics, and market climates to choose the right books and frame them in the best way to generate the most sales.
- An author finds an agent to represent their work. Agents read a lot of manuscripts (unpublished books) and decide which ones they think they will be able to sell to a publisher.
- An agent offers the book to editors who work at publishers. The agent will negotiate the terms of the contract with the editor. Sometimes several editors will want to buy the book and the author and agent will visit the interested publishers and decide which is the best fit – or there may be an auction and whoever offers the most money wins.
- An editor buys the book and works with the author to edit it. Editing a book usually takes around 18 months (but this can vary hugely). Editors may suggest significant changes to a book eg.
- The production team prepares the book to be released. The production team is responsible for making the actual book, whether it’s a printed book or an ebook.

Unfortunately, not all publishers have your best interests in mind. Predatory publishers, called vanity presses, charge authors to publish their books. Legitimate publishers screen authors and only publish books they think will sell. They invest in these books, expecting them to sell well and make everyone a tidy profit. On the other hand, vanity p...
