Swelling in the ankles, feet and legs is often caused by a build-up of fluid. It should go away on its own but see GP if it does not improve after treating at home for a few days.
Common causes include standing or sitting too long, eating too much salt food, being overweight, taking certain medicines and having problems with kidneys/liver/heart.
Symptoms include swollen or puffy skin, shiny stretched skin and changes in skin colour.
Raise your legs on pillows when you can; get gentle exercise like walking to improve blood flow; wear wide comfortable shoes with low heel & soft sole; wash dry & moisturise your feet to avoid infections. Do not stand or sit for long periods of time & do not wear tight clothes socks or shoes that are too tight.
See GP if swelling has not improved after treating it at home for a few days; gets worse; only one ankle foot leg is swollen without obvious cause such as injury etc.; severe painful sudden swelling starts etc..
