Mount Benson [2] (Halkomelem: Tatch-to-lan, Taitookton; Chinook jargon: Wakesiah [3] [4]) is a mountain located on Vancouver Island, British Columbia located 9 km (5.6 mi) west of Nanaimo. At one time, there was road access to the peak as there was a fire lookout at the summit.

Mount Benson via Gordie's Trail is a beautiful route with rewarding panoramic views at the top. The beginning and end are the hardest, but the middle section is a bit more gradual. Essentially an uphill climb the entire way with a few flat parts that are relieving.

Mt Benson's shape is recognizable, even iconic to enthusiasts like myself. When you approach Nanaimo from the south (e.g., Ladysmith), the mountain's ridgeline is sharply conical, seen on-end. But from Central/North Nanaimo the mountain sprawls along half the sky - a long wall of forest-carpeted bluffs!
