Jun 8, 2020 · The purpose of speaking in tongues as laid out in the Bible is for edification, or encouragement. 1 Corinthians 14.4–5 says that a person speaking in tongues edifies themselves, and that when accompanied by an interpretation it edifies the whole church (Paul also makes clear that a person should pray for an interpretation of what they say).
So, in short, Jesus revealed that (1) speaking in tongues is a sign that is supposed to follow all believers and (2) that speaking in tongues is a gift reserved for the New Testament believer. In the next section, we will cover if Jesus was really referring to the supernatural gift of speaking in tongues, or if He was referring to something else.
