Miffy (Dutch: nijntje, pronounced nɛiɲcə) is a small female rabbit in a series of picture books drawn and written by Dutch artist Dick Bruna.
Miffy was created in 1955 after Bruna had been telling his one-year-old son, Sierk, stories about a little rabbit they had seen earlier in the dunes, while on holiday. Miffy became a female after Bruna decided that he wanted to draw a dress and not trousers on his rabbit. Depending on the story, Miffy can range in age from being a baby to being four years old.
At first Miffy looked like a toy animal with floppy ears, but by 1963, her design was changed to her current incarnation, a stylized form of a rabbit. Miffy is drawn in a graphic style, with minimalist black graphic lines. Bruna chose to only use black, white, the primary colors (red, yellow and blue), green, orange, brown, and gray; Bruna even feels that colors like purple are not "real" colors. It is his use of primarily primary colors that makes Miffy instantly recognizable, and also popular with preschoolers, because of her bright and intense simplistic colors.
Miffy is a little girl rabbit. She likes to draw. She also likes to play with her friends. Miffy has a father and mother, a grandpa and grandma. There’s also a story where Baby Bunny joins the family, though the baby's gender is never revealed. She has an Aunt Alice who is Miffy's father's sister. There is also Uncle Pilot, who is not really Miffy's uncle. He's simply a friend of the family, but Miffy calls him “uncle”, something Dutch people commonly do.
Miffy is sometimes referred to as 'miff' or 'miffy bun', the latter extended to her parents, resulting in 'mother bun' and 'father bun'. This is especially common in the Miffy books, though this does not happen in any of the television series.
