Each color has its own charm and appeal, and Rat Terrier enthusiasts often have their own preferences when it comes to the perfect shade.
May 7, 2024 · White And Fawn Rat Terrier Fawn is a light yellowish-tan color that is quite common in many dog breeds, but it’s still highly valued. The yellow color isn’t as prominent as is the case in lemon Rat terriers, but it isn’t as pale as it would be in cream pups.
This is a color that is often over-looked because most people simply dismiss it as a blue fawn. A lilac is a faded caramel color with pearl or lavender tipped hair and a pearl or lavender nose. The lilac is a chocolate sable dog with the recessive blue dilution gene.
- Apricot Rat Terrier. Apricot and Lemon Rat terrier is a term often used interchangeably. While the shade can be put in the same category, there are a few important differences.
- Sable Rat Terrier. For a sable Rat terrier, you need only one parent to have the recessive gene and you get at least one sable Ratter. What is sable? It is similar to a multi-color gradient.
- Blue Fawn Rat Terrier. Most breeds, including the Rat terrier, have a dilute gene color option. Whenever you see blue in the name of the color it is kind of a clickbait.
- Piebald Rat Terrier. This is more of a color pattern than a color itself. Why is it called bald though… Well, there are spots of regular Ratter colors on a predominantly white body.
Color Code: Numerical codes are used since most AKC paperwork is now being done online. The acceptable breed colors and markings are already set up in the AKC database. If you go to this link www.akc.org/registration/colormarkings.cfm and pull up Rat Terrier, you'll see them listed.
Black, white, brown, tan, orange, pearl, chocolate, lemon, and apricot are the most common Rat Terrier colors. These colors come in many combinations in bicolor fur coats or tricolor coats. But the unique feature is there’s always even a bit of white marking on the Rat Terrier’s body.
The Rat Terrier can be considered a very colourful breed; with few colours being faulted or disallowed. Eliminating faults/disqualifying colours are merle dogs, dogs with brindle colouration and solid dogs without significant (greater than 1 inch) white markings.
