- Create Some Fire Starters. One of the reasons we clean out highly flammable dryer lint is to prevent fires. So, why not use it to start a fire when and where you want one?
- Stuff Small Crafts. If you just need a bit of filling for a craft project, ornament or toy, use lint. Again, it is clean and free! Dryer lint is not a good choice for any project that will later be washed.
- Prevent Soil Erosion and Weed Growth. A thick layer of lint is not a great mulch for plants that you want to thrive, but it can prevent weed growth and erosion in areas that need extra help.
- Spin Into Thread. If you are a fiber artist, lint can be spun into new thread or yarn to use in knitting or crochet projects. And, if you don't like the color of the thread, use natural dyes to create a range of beautiful colors.

- As a Fire Starter / Tinder. I’ll start with this one since it’s the most relevant for survival. Dryer lint is flammable so, if you can generate a few sparks and you have kindling ready.
- As Compost. Careful, here. You don’t want too many synthetic fibers. If you wear a lot of polyester clothes or use blended synthetic fiber towels, you need to understand that those fibers don’t break down as easily as organic cotton or wool fibers.
- To Make Dryer Lint Paper. Although I can’t imagine an SHTF situation where you have electricity to use your dryer but no way to get some paper, it’s nice to know you can turn one into the other.
- To help retain moisture for your plants. Spread it on top of the earth inside the bottom of your flower or garden pot. Water your plants as usual. The dryer lint in the bottom helps hold moisture longer for your plants to access.
- Fire Starter. Having a last-minute barbeque and need a quick fire starter? Or maybe you’re regularly lighting the fire in the winter and buying fire starters is becoming a pricey operation?
- Pet Bedding. If you have a small rodent as a pet, such as a hamster, gerbil or rat then you know how often you have to change the bedding in their cages.
- Preventing Weed Growth or Erosion in the Garden. Dryer lint can also come in handy when you’re gardening. Lint from cotton, linen and flax is best in this case and can be used to prevent weed growth as well as erosion in parts of your garden that may be needing a little extra attention.
- Composting. In addition, the same type of lint (cotton, linen and flax) is also a great addition to the compost heap. It is best to add it in even amounts across the top of the pile before wetting it and then mixing it into the compost with a spade or rake.
