    • Nevermind’ For all the activity that greeted the 20th anniversary of ‘Nevermind’ in 2011, the thing turned into quite the non-event. That reunion show fronted by Adam Lambert thankfully remained the stuff of nightmares, the alternative versions that padded out the box set, as is always the case, remained resolutely For The Fans, and the exhibition in Brick Lane was laughably undernourished.
    • In Utero’ “Teenage angst has paid off well, now I’m bored and old,” croaked Kurt as ‘Serve The Servants’ powered itself into being. And ‘In Utero’ was the sound of a band trying to work out what shape it should take once the initial rush of good times were petering out.
    • Unplugged In New York’ Advertisement. People love to talk with hushed reverence about ‘Unplugged In New York’ as some kind of spirit guide pointing toward what the band would have ended up doing had Kurt survived.
    • Bleach’ Advertisement. If ‘Bleach’ is the sound of a band half-finished, it’s still one pretty excellent work in progress. In 1989, grunge wasn’t yet a thing, and we at NME were naming ‘3 Feet High And Rising’ as album of the year – above ‘The Stone Roses’ (oops) – so the nubile young Nirvana weren’t anywhere close to occupying the zeitgeist.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LrJQIT66I5w As Nirvana’s debut album, Bleach is less refined than the group’s later works and the sound is one example. More metal-inspired than Nevermind and In Utero, Bleach features tracks such as “Negative Creep”, “Blew” and “Floyd the Barber”, which exemplify the coarse sound perfectly. While it isn’t as lyrical...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MR8Qdksg-6Y The third and final studio album by the group, In Utero is known to many Nirvana fans as the darker followup to the more commercially friendly Nevermind. Indeed, the LP lives up to its reputation with tracks such as “Scentless Apprentice”, “Radio Friendly Unit Shifter” and “Milk It”, which all eschew the ...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q72w10D9_x0 The album that catapulted the group into the spotlight, Nevermind is Nirvana’s magnum opus and it’s not very hard to see why. Discounting the overrated, yet still solid signature track “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, Nevermind not only contains hit singles such as “Come As You Are”, “In Bloom” and “Lithium”, b...

While technically not LP studio albums of original material, I find it only fair to rank Nirvana’s albums Incesticide and Unplugged. They were just as much a part of the group and deserve proper recognition. So without further ado, here are the two additional albums ranked!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=it370IZgdDI Released between Nevermind and In Utero, Incesticide contains some of the group’s harsher tracks such as “Aneurysm”, while also containing lighter work such as “Been a Son”. Because it’s partially compilation album and doesn’t fully contain new work, I can’t rank it the same way I’d rank a full LP. But fo...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9iAqEyOeJQM This posthumous release outclasses Incesticide for a simple reason. While Incesticide featured the sides of Nirvana we already were aware of, Unplugged introduced us to Nirvana’s calmer, more thoughtful side to a degree we hadn’t previously seen. Unlike most groups at the time, Nirvana played few of their...

    • Bleach (Sub Pop, 1989) As the 1980s drew to a close, Nirvana weren't even the best band in their adopted hometown, much less the world. With tongue firmly in cheek, Sub Pop co-founder and hype man Jonathan Poneman liked to tell visitors to Seattle that Kurt Cobain's band would be “bigger than The Beatles”, a joke carried on in the press release accompanying Bleach (‘They’re young, they own their own van and they’re going to make us rich!’)
    • Nevermind (DGC, 1991) Courtney Love once likened her late husband's ambitious streak to that of Madonna in the '80s, and whatever he may subsequently have told the world's media, and perhaps himself, notes scribbled in his journals betrayed the fact that Kurt Cobain always had his heart set on making a big mainstream rock record.
    • Incesticide (DGC, 1992) On June 12, 1992, a full month ahead of the release of its third single Lithium, Nirvana's Nevermind album was certified quadruple platinum for four million sales in the US alone.
    • In Utero (DGC, 1993) A conflicted, complicated man, Kurt Cobain was never quite the rebellious iconoclast that he desired to be - his scorched earth punk rock manifestos being constantly held in check by his commercial instincts - and his internal internecine tensions were never more harshly illuminated than on In Utero.

Only “best.” So if your favorite Nirvana release lands in a low spot on my ranking, please don’t take it personally. “I celebrate their entire catalog,” to paraphrase the Bobs.
