Jul 21, 2023 · Scalp conditions are common and usually not serious, though they can be irritating. Some common conditions of the scalp include adrogenetic alopecia, psoriasis, ringworm, and head lice. Scalp conditions are usually diagnosed through a simple physical examination and history.
- Dandruff. Little white flakes signal an old-fashioned case of dandruff. It can be annoying when the flakes fall on a dark shirt. Dandruff is simply a buildup of shedding dead skin.
- Seborrheic Dermatitis. Dandruff is a mild form of seborrheic dermatitis. In more severe cases, you’ll see a reddening of the scalp and a lot of oil. You may also see reddish, greasy crusty scales between your eyebrows, and around your nose and ears.
- Cradle Cap. This form of seborrheic dermatitis affects infants, typically in the first 6 months. It causes greasy, yellowish scales or crusts on the scalp.
- Head Lice. Lice are an unpleasant but all-too-common part of childhood. More than 12 million Americans get them every year, and most are between the ages of 3 and 11.
- Head lice. A head louse is a parasitic insect that can live on a person’s scalp, eyebrows, and eyelashes. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the most common symptom is an itchy scalp.
- Scalp psoriasis. Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition that occurs when the skin grows too rapidly. According to one 2018 article, around 45–56% of those with psoriasis experience the condition on the scalp.
- Seborrheic dermatitis. Seborrheic dermatitis is a type of eczema that resembles psoriasis. According to the National Eczema Association, the condition appears with dry, flushed skin and greasy yellow or white scales that often occur near the ears or around the hairline.
- Androgenetic alopecia. According to the United States National Library of Medicine, androgenetic alopecia is a common cause of hair loss. In males, common symptoms include a receding hairline and balding at the crown.
