From coral reefs to salt marshes, there are many different types of ocean habitats to explore. Some of these are incredibly lively and filled with thousands of well-known species, while others are dark, rarely explored, and populated by some of the strangest creatures on Earth.

- Earth Underwater. Oceans are areas of salty water that fill enormous basins on the Earth’s surface. Even though Earth has one continuous body of saltwater, scientists and geographers divide it into five different sections.
- Climate Control. Kelp forests provide food and shelter for marine animals. Oceans help keep Earth’s climate habitable. By moving water around the globe, the oceans help to keep places from getting too hot or too cold.
- Ocean or Sea? Animals such as seahorses, clownfish, and sea turtles all live on coral reefs. And the corals are animals too! The words “ocean” and “sea” are often used to mean the same thing.
- Ocean Life. Some giant manta rays have 20-foot wingspans. Scientists think that up to 91 percent of marine species have not yet been identified; but there could be as many as 700,000 of them!
Most marine life is found in coastal habitats, even though the shelf area occupies only seven percent of the total ocean area. Open ocean habitats are found in the deep ocean beyond the edge of the continental shelf. Alternatively, marine habitats can be divided into pelagic and demersal zones.
