- Sensible World Of Soccer (1992) End-to-end footy viewed through God’s own eyeballs, with heavenly results. There’s a strong case for PES to be in top spot, but the single factor propelling Sensi above it is timelessness.
- Pro Evolution Soccer 6 (2006) The main reason for limiting entries to this list to one-per-series is that the entire top ten would otherwise have been an extended Pro Evo party.
- Championship Manager: Season 01/02 (2001) Cherno Samba. Mark Kerr. Tonton Zola Moukouko. Just three of the pro footballers who achieved little of note in their real careers, yet remain hall of famers among those weaned on Sports Interactive’s succulent managerial teats.
- FIFA 98: Road to World Cup (1997) Sure, the newest version is as flash as football games can get – but this list is about more than pure perfection. Many remember EA’s series most fondly on Sega’s Mega Drive; in retrospect, though, its isometric viewpoint looked flashy, but limited passing options and goal variety.
- ESPN NFL 2K5. ESPN NFL 2K5 was a visionary entry in a series that had its time cut short. The final installment in the series—before an exclusivity agreement between EA Sports and the NFL took hold—was developed by Visual Concepts and published by SEGA.
- Tecmo Super Bowl. Tecmo Super Bowl seemed to start it all. The NES classic is still wildly relevant. It has a cult following due to its style, accessibility in various formats and via the recreation of modern events within its 16-bit style.
- NFL Blitz 2000. NFL Blitz 2000 is arguably the best football arcade game of all time. While the original NFL Blitz launched in 1997, this release was an extension of NFL Blitz 99 and brought the arcade classic to home consoles via the Nintendo 64, PlayStation and Dreamcast.
- Madden 2005. Vick and hot routes transcended the realm of video games in a big way. But those things still don't come close to the hit stick. The natural response to Madden 2004 was Madden 2005, with Ray Lewis poetically draped on the cover as the series introduced its signature defensive feature.

- Pro Evolution Soccer 6. For years, Pro Evo matched FIFA stride-for-stride and kick-for-kick, but the general perception is that FIFA has come to dominate in recent years.
- FIFA World Cup '98. FIFA is currently the dominant colossus of football games, ruling the roost with its management partner-in-crime Football Manager - that is until 2023 comes around.

You can’t have a best football games list without bringing EA’s behemoth FIFA franchise into the equation, so we won’t bore you with the details of a series you’ve almost undoubtedly encountered over the years. Fully licenced teams and player likenesses, big budget production values and a great, ever-improving on-the-pitch action, FIFA’s fortunes have waxed and waned, but it’s now in a golden period where it barely puts a foot wrong. FIFA is console football gaming as we once only dreamed of. But, if you’re after a FIFA that still holds a special place in our hearts, cast your mind back to FIFA 98: Road to World Cup, with its three features that remain sorely missed to this day: indoor football matches, a cheating dive move and a dedicated dirty tackle button.
