Sep 3, 2021 · Ridderbos’ commentary, as the subtitle suggests, focuses on the theological issues raised by John in his Gospel, in particular the identity of Jesus, the “Son of Man” and “Son of God.” This is a valuable and insightful commentary.
John scatters seven signs like turning water into wine (2:1–11), feeding the multitude (6:1–15), and raising Lazarus (11:1–44) throughout his Gospel. They point to Christ’s distinctiveness as the God-man. He also includes seven “I Am” sayings which illuminate the distinctive characteristics of Christ’s saving work.
The best commentaries on John ranked by scholars and reviewers: (1) D. A. Carson in PNTC, (2) Craig S. Keener, (3) Leon Morris in NICNT.
