It’s all apertures and focal lengths, ISO and chromatic aberration. But don’t worry. We have compiled a dictionary of photography slang and acronyms to help you.

– stands for Advanced Photo System type-C and is an image sensor format found in many cameras today. It is equivalent in size to the Advanced Photo System film negative in its “Classic” format, of 25.1×16.7 mm, an aspect ratio of 3:2. It is approximately 1.5 smaller compared to full frame 35mm sensors.

– a function of a camera that allows it to adjust the focus of the lens to a specific position in view, making sure that the subject of your photograph is sharp. Some cameras have a dedicated button for this while others require a push of the shutter releasebutton.

– is the quality and aesthetics of an intentionally out of focus section of an image. It is often used in portrait photography, to emphasize the subject. Bokeh is a product of lens design and construction.

- Aperture. Aperture is the opening through which light passes through the lens to enter the camera. Its size can be modified to control how much light reaches the sensor or negative film.
- Aspect ratio. Aspect ratio defines the relationship between an image’s lengths, represented as width:height. It is predetermined by the dimensions of the camera’s sensor, but can be altered in post processing.
- Blue hour. Blue hour is the short period of time before sunrise or after sunset when the sun is just below the horizon. Indirect sunlight is evenly diffused and takes on a blue shade.
- Bokeh. Bokeh is an optical phenomenon that makes bright out-of-focus elements aesthetically pleasing. Using a fast lens at its wider aperture turns a busy background into a blurred, homogenic canvas where light appears as soft shapes.
