Its high level of seed production and the ability of its seed to germinate soon after release lead to dense mats of the weed. It grows on both rich and poor soils up to almost 600 m in altitude.

An ephemeral plant is a plant with a very short life cycle or very short period of active growth, often one that grows only during brief periods when conditions are favorable. Several types of ephemeral plants exist.
- Nettles. BOTANICAL NAME: Urtica dioica. PLANT TYPE: PERENNIAL / ANNUAL. UK NATIVE: YES. Topping our list of weeds are nasty nettles. There are both perennial and annual types of nettles which both grow in clumps, reaching up to 1.2m in height.
- Docks. BOTANICAL NAME: Rumex crispus. PLANT TYPE: PERENNIAL. UK NATIVE: YES. That said, once established, they are more of a pain than a stinging nettle sting!
- Creeping Thistle. BOTANICAL NAME: Cirsium arvense. PLANT TYPE: PERENNIAL. UK NATIVE: YES. When it comes to creeping thistle, you are going to want to get on top of the problem fast as, once established, this plant can be extremely difficult to eradicate completely.
- Creeping Buttercup. BOTANICAL NAME: Ranunculus repens. PLANT TYPE: PERENNIAL. UK NATIVE: YES. Whilst the creeping buttercup does produce rather charming, yellow flowers, beloved by children trying to discern who likes butter, the plant itself is a rather irritating issue for gardeners.
Ephemerals are small plants which are often confused with annuals. However, unlike annuals, ephemeral plants germinate, grow, flowers, set seed and die many times within one growing season or year.
Ephemeral is a plant that has several life cycles in a growing season and can increase in numbers rapidly, for example, groundsel (Senecio vulgaris). You may sometimes be asked to define these terms in exam questions.
Ephemeral Weeds. These weeds often have more than one life cycle per year, so ordinary weed killers are not effective. Examples of ephemeral weeds: Groundsel. Hairy bittercress. Chickweed. Annual Weeds. Annual weeds grow and flower rapidly. They seed in the winter and come back throughout the year. Examples of annual weeds: Fat hen. Yellow oxalis.
Chickweed and groundsel are two common ephemeral weeds. Biennial weeds are so called because they have a two-year growing cycle. These weeds can be very difficult to get rid of - examples include hemlock and ragwort.
