- The typical Viking beverage was mead. They enjoyed wine as well, when they could plunder it from other Europeans.
- Viking chieftains were sometimes buried with an actual longboat, so that they could use it to sail to the afterlife.
- The English names for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday come from references to three Viking gods: "Odin's Day," "Thor's Day," and "Frigga's Day."
- The halls built by the Vikings were the largest structures built in northern Europe during the Middle Ages.

- The Vikings were famous for sailing huge distances from their home in Scandinavia between AD 800 and 1066 to raid and plunder, but they also traded with people from other countries.
- The name ‘Viking’ means ‘a pirate raid’ in the Old Norse language.
- Around 500 years before Christopher Columbus ‘discovered’ the American continent, Vikings had visited its shores, landing in what is now Canada in around AD 1000.
- Among the many gods Vikings believed in were Thor, the god of thunder, and Loki, a cheeky mischief-maker who could shape-shift to become all different kinds of animals.
- The Icelandic Sagas. Much of what we ‘know’ about the Vikings was written down in Icelandic sagas. The problem is many of these stories were written down hundreds of years after they took place.
- The accounts of enemies. The Vikings wrote down almost nothing about their own adventures. Aside from the sagas, the rest of our knowledge is made up of accounts written down by people in lands that were conquered.
- Viking helmets did not have horns. It’s possible ceremonial or burial helmets had horns. But everyday helmets worn in battle most definitely did not. In fact, some historians believe that painters invented the horned helmet as recently as the 19th century!
- They may not have even worn helmets! So few complete helmets have ever been found, leading some to believe they never wore helmets during battles. Perhaps they wore leather headwear, which is much less likely to survive for so long.
