Mar 28, 2023 · Accreditation by Assistance Dogs (UK) is not a legal requirement, but it can be helpful in providing evidence that a dog is a genuine assistance dog. Assistance Dogs (UK) has also developed a Public Access Test that assesses the behavior of assistance dogs in public spaces.
We currently have twelve member organisations that have been accredited by Assistance Dogs International (ADI) and/or The International Guide Dog Federation (IGDF). We also have six organisations (candidates) that are working towards the same accreditation that our members have.
Assistance Dog Registration and Proof. There is no official registration or certification process for assistance dogs in the UK so there is no legal ‘proof’ that you can ask for from someone who is accompanied by an assistance dog.
Assistance Dogs International is the biggest body which accredits assistance dog organisations to their standards in the world. Of the 130+ accredited organisations, 11 are in the UK. There are also an additional 6 candidate programmes who are working towards ADI accrediation.
Assistance dogs are dogs trained to assist a disabled person by mitigating their disability. Assistance dogs can be trained by anyone, and are not required to be certified, registered, or accredited. Assistance dogs should be highly trained, healthy, not aggressive and not disruptive.
Dogs who qualify as assistance dogs must fit the legal definition provided by the Equality Act 2010. The Act defines assistance dogs as those which have been either: Assistance dogs are usually trained by one of the charities accredited by Assistance Dogs UK, although some are trained by individuals.
