- Par 4, 451 yards. Two fairway bunkers protect the preferred line of approach to the first green at Southern Hills. Like many big-city-country-club golf courses, Southern Hills starts astride a hilltop clubhouse and heads downhill.
- Par 4, 480 yards. The meandering system of creeks at Southern Hills confronts golfers for the first time (of many) at the second hole. Options and width are crucial elements of course design, and Hanse's restoration has brought both to this long two-shotter.
- Par 4, 444 yards. The tight confines of Southern Hills third hole's fairway place a premium on accuracy off the tee. Reversing direction from the previous hole, this two-shotter demands precision off the tee and into the green, which will slough off shots into three bunkers or low-lying short grass chipping areas.
- Par 4, 377 yards. After three stout par fours to start, Southern Hills' fourth hole requires a precise wedge or short iron uphill to a small green.
There’s nothing flash about Southern Hills. Mature deciduous trees line many of the Bermuda grass fairways and the rough is notoriously thick and tangly. Apart from the rough and 7,481 championship yards, Southern Hills is there for the taking. But not for long.
