  1. The BMW 1 Series family has become a little confusing. While an all-new hatchback was launched in late 2011, both this 1 Series Coupe and 1 Series Convertible are still based on the older design.

The new BMW 1-series coupé is a hugely significant car. Forget the paltry projected sales figures (BMW GB expects to sell no more than 3600 a year of all variants), and forget the, er, challenging visual detailing. In fact, you can even forget about the mouthwateringly powerful 135i that we drove last week. Why? Because I would bet several of my li...

The 123d’s performance on the road is equally impressive, with a smooth, linear power delivery providing decent shove from 1800rpm right up to 4500rpm. It’s pretty refined, too, though not as sonorous as a BMW or Audi six-cylinder diesel. For rest of the car, the praise is a little less gushing. As with the 135i, the 123d is a neat and tidy handler...

Yes. An over-the-odds sticker price is not enough to spoil the 123d – this is still a distinctive, interesting car. With a brilliant engine. -Matt Rigby

  2. BMW 1 Series Coupe (2008 – 2013) handling and engines. Engines range from 118d Automatic to 125i. Readers report Real MPG to be between 20–59 mpg. And as well as the 2,979cc 306PS petrol engine you can also have it with two 1,995cc diesels, one of which offers a respectable 177PS and the other a jaw-dropping 204PS.

  3. Introduction. The BMW 1 Series Coupe didn't get off to the happiest of starts. Without being overly diplomatic, it looked a bit funny. That tall, top hat-like glasshouse coupled with its stubby proportions didn't rest easy on the eye. That said, few disagreed that it was better looking than the hatchback it was spawned from.

  4. Fitted with this engine, the 335i 3 Series Coupe feels like eight tenths of an M3, so you can imagine how vigorously it's going to shift the lighter 1 Series two-door. If you can't, 0-60mph is pegged at 5.3s and the 155mph top speed is electronically limited. Almost as impressive is the 123d.

  5. June 2011 All-new second generation BMW 1 Series revealed. It remains the only rear-wheel-drive car in its class, and with a range of advanced TwinPower petrol and diesel engines, the new BMW 1 Series offers an even more sporty but fuel-efficient proposition. This is further boosted by BMW’s EfficientDynamics technologies as standard.
