A custom sound processor called AMY had been in development at Atari, Inc. and was considered for the new ST computer design. The chip needed more time to complete, so AMY was dropped in favor of a commodity Yamaha YM2149F variant of the General Instrument AY-3-8910.
The Atari ST is a home/personal computer that was released by Atari Corporation in 1985 and commercially available from that summer into the early 1990s. The "ST" officially stands for "Sixteen/Thirty-two", which referred to the Motorola 68000's 16-bit external bus and 32-bit internals.
The ST was obviously a good computer, but it used widely available chips. The Amiga included groundbreaking chips designed by the Amiga team, that could pull of lots of tricks and effects, working in conjunction with the 68000 cpu, and not stealing clock cycles while they did so.
