Jan 13, 2015 · Many commentators dismiss any connection between this Zacharias and Zacharias son of Barachias in the gospels, chiefly on the grounds that Matthew was written before the events of 67 CE. So, once we move the date of Matthew's Gospel to a point later than 67, Josephus' account comes into play.
Zacharias, son of Barachias - It is not certainly known who this was. Some have thought that it was the Zecharias whose death is recorded in 2 Chronicles 24:20-21. He is there called the son of Jehoiada; but it is known that it was common among the Jews to have two names, as Matthew is called Levi; Lebbeus, Thaddeus; and Simon, Cephas.
This apocryphal text interpreted the Matthew 23:35 phrase “Zacharias son of Barachias” as a reference to John the Baptist’s father, who shared the same name, but not the same paternity or priesthood position.

These in their historical order are: Zacharias the son of Jehoiada, Zacharias the son of Barachiah, the post- exilian prophet, Zacharias the father of John the Baptist, and Zacharias the son of Baruch, slain by the Zealots in Jerusalem, in A. D. 67.
Zacharias. 1. A person mentioned in Matthew 23:35 Luke 11:51, and most probably designating the son of the high-priest Jehoida, or Barachias, who was stoned to death by order of king Joash for publicly rebuking the king, his court and the people for their growing corruption, 2 Chronicles 24:20-22.
It is not at all probable that the Prophet Zacharias is referred to by Christ (Matthew 23:35; Luke 11:51) as having been slain by the Jews in the Temple; that Zacharias was the son of Joiada (2 Chronicles 24:20).
