- Though the original story of Pinocchio, written in 1883 by Italian Carlo Collodi, involves more mature elements than were depicted in Disney’s 1940 musical adaption of the story, according to The Guardian, there is no evidence to suggest the original story involved slavery.

May 14, 2024 · No, that's not true: The fictional story is about a puppet made from an enchanted piece of wood. Gepetto was not a slave master. The story was written by Carlo Collodi in installments for the Italian pamphlet "Il Giornale per i bambini" beginning in 1881 and predates Walt Disney's 1940 animated adaptation of the story.
Geppetto is an elderly, impoverished woodcarver and the creator (and thus 'father') of Pinocchio. He wears a yellow wig resembling cornmeal mush (called polendina), and consequently his neighbors call him "Polendina" to annoy him. The name Geppetto is a Tuscan diminutive of the name Giuseppe (Italian for Joseph).
Pinocchio is a wooden marionette (a puppet that is manipulated with wires or strings) and not a hand puppet (directly controlled from inside by the puppeteer's hand). However, the piece of wood from which he is derived is animated, and so Pinocchio moves independently.
