I was under the impression that Hildesheim escaped the war without much damage. Looking at pictures of Hildesheim today, it still looks charming and pretty, I wouldn't have thought it took that much damage. Perhaps it was easier to rebuild as it is a relatively small town?
Hildesheim remained spared direct combat operations for a relatively long time during World War II, but this sense of security proved to be a deceptive hope at the latest in the spring of 1944. Allied reconnaissance now also increasingly targeted Hildesheim.
