- Tick, Tick... BOOM! The influence of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s work is definitely obvious in this list. And while In the Heights was a film adaption of his first musical, Miranda made his directorial debut with the Tick, Tick…BOOM!
- West Side Story. The final movie musical to arrive in 2021 was Steven Spileberg’s new take on West Side Story. While the legendary filmmaker had big shoes to fill after the 1961 movie, he paired with the incomparable Tony Kushner and crafted a new take on the story we know and love.
- In The Heights. In the Heights was set up to be a summer blockbuster, but was also available to watch via HBO Max. Directed by Crazy Rich Asians’ Jon M. Chu, he took that same larger-than-life filmmaking and brought it to the musical genre.
- Everybody's Talking About Jamie. This one might have gone under the radar for some movie fans. Everybody’s Talking About Jamie was released on Amazon Prime Video in the middle of September, and it was one of my favorite movie musicals of the year.

Kay Cannon of Pitch Perfect fame brings to the screen her own adaptation of the classic Cinderella. In this rendition, Cannon goes to her familiar wheelhouse of using modern pop and rock hits and makes Cinderella become more jukebox than Rodgers and Hammerstein. Starring popstar Camila Cabelo as Cinderella as well as Broadway royalty, Billy Porter ...
After winning the Tony in 2017, plans began for a motion picture adaptation of Dear Evan Hansen. Casting Ben Platt as the titular character came with some controversy as he was 28 years old playing a 16-year-old. To be fair, no one in the main HS cast was under 24, and Platt is remarkable in the role he originated on Broadway so the criticism may b...
If you’re a traditionalist, this may not be the musical for you. However, if you’re in the mood to see something completely different, this film will not disappoint. Henry (Adam Driver) is a subversive comedian who marries beloved opera singer, Ann (Marion Cotillard). Their relationship is tumultuous but results in a child together named Annette. P...
Before Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda swept the 2008 Tony’s with his first musical, In the Heights. The film adaptation finally arrived in June after a year’s delay. Anthony Ramos stars as Usnavi as he takes us through his daily life in the NYC neighborhood of Washington Heights. Usnavi has big dreams of starting over in his native Dominican Republic...
Jamie New (Max Harwood) dreams of being a drag queen. But being a gay 17-year-old in a small Northern English town, his dreams feel far from his reach. His mom (Sarah Lancashire), his best friend (Lauren Patel), and local former drag queen, Hugo (Richard E. Grant) lend their support as best they can, but it’s Jamie who has to learn to be comfortabl...
Remaking a classic movie musical is no small undertaking, but leave it to Steven Spielberg to make it work. With a gritty touch of reality and a more culturally relevant cast than the beloved original, Spielberg is able to walk the fine line of reinvention and paying homage. It is the ladies who really shine in this version as newcomer Rachel Zegle...
Imagine being on the cusp of seeing your dream realized only to die the night before it happens. It sounds like a movie, but unfortunately, it is the tragic truth of Jonathan Larson. The film examines Jonathan’s life before he wrote Rent and his struggle to leave a legacy before he runs out of time. Andrew Garfield, in an Oscar-worthy performance, ...
Live to Tape Musicals - There is a tradition of recording Broadway Musicals on their Broadway stages with the original casts and turning them into a movie. It has been done for a long time (and yet not nearly enough). When Hamilton released their recording in the summer of 2020, it was clear that there was a big audience for this type of musical. I...
- Roberrt - 6.6. Roberrt is about a man with a violent past who has been trying to live a peaceful life with his son. When aspects of his past come back to haunt him, however, he must face them to protect his family.

- 'West Side Story' Now in theaters. The word "masterpiece" gets thrown around far too loosely, but Steven Spielberg’s rapturous "West Side Story" is as close to perfection as you can expect from a movie musical.
- 'tick, tick ... BOOM! ' Now streaming on Netflix. In "tick, tick ... ," Lin-Manuel Miranda has made the ultimate movie for musical theater fans. No film in recent memory has better captured the anxiety and crushing disappointment of creating art, and the thrill of seeing your work come to life that makes all the heartache (almost) worth it.
- 'Annette' Now streaming on Amazon Prime. Nothing we say here could prepare you for the inspired lunacy of "Annette," which takes itself both completely seriously and not at all.
- 'In the Heights' Available to buy or rent. Few modern directors know their way around a movie musical better than Jon M. Chu, who's been tapped to helm the "Wicked" adaptation starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande in light of his phenomenal work on "In the Heights."
