- 'Killers of the Flower Moon' (2023) Director: Martin Scorsese. Martin Scorsese has been making feature films for well over half a century at this point, and 2023's Killers of the Flower Moon shows that the legendary filmmaker - now in his early 80s - is still capable of greatness.
- 'Summer of Soul (…or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised)' (2021) Director: Questlove. With the well-received re-release of Talking Heads' Stop Making Sense, as well as the huge success of Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, it's possible to see the 2020s as one where the concert film is making a comeback.
- 'Poor Things' (2023) Director: Yorgos Lanthimos. Yorgos Lanthimos was very prolific from the mid to late 2010s, putting out three films in relatively quick succession: 2015's The Lobster, 2017's The Killing of a Sacred Deer, and 2018's The Favourite.
- 'Drive My Car' (2021) Director: Ryusuke Hamaguchi. The 2020s has, so far, been a particularly great decade for Japanese cinema, as demonstrated by the aforementioned The Boy and the Heron and Godzilla Minus One.

Movies achieve Certified Fresh status by maintaining a Tomatometer score of at least 75% after a minimum number of reviews, with that number depending on how the movie was released.
- Parasite. ‘Have you seen Parasite?’ became the new greeting in our office back in January. I hadn’t, and regularly had to vacate the area to avoid spoilers.
- Rocks. I can’t stop thinking about Rocks. The cast, the script, the way it’s shot: everything about it is so authentic there are moments when you feel you’re watching a documentary rather than a coming-of-age drama.
- Saint Maud. I was very taken by Rose Glass’s astonishing directorial debut. ‘ British seaside horror’ was always going to appeal to me, but I was not expecting to come away from this uncanny masterpiece quite so affected.
- Portrait of a Lady on Fire. This French romance scratched a very specific itch for me by being a period piece where people repeatedly and dramatically run up to the edges of cliffs (Black Narcissus is another high point in this subgenre).
- Mangrove. Steve McQueen's entire Small Axe series, five exhilarating and eclectic films dealing with the black British and Caribbean community from the 1960s through to the 80s, reveals his unique ability to match art with social conscience.
- Wolfwalkers. Anyone who has seen The Secret of Kells or Song of the Sea will recognise the Celtic mysticism and the ornate, angular animation favoured by their director, Tomm Moore.
- I’m Thinking of Ending Things. Charlie Kaufman's mind-bending horror drama is like no other film this year – or any other year, for that matter. Adapted from Iain Reid's novel, it stars the superb Jessie Buckley as a young woman who drives through the snow with her faintly menacing boyfriend, Jesse Plemons, to meet his eccentric parents, Toni Collette and David Thewlis, on their family farm.
- Ammonite. Kate Winslet gives one of the most dazzling performances of her career as the real-life Mary Anning, whose 19th-Century discoveries of fossils transformed palaeontology, although the credit went to men.
